Team Bermuda
hopes to carry into this tournament the momentum of their
success achieved at the last World Street
and Ball Hockey Championships held in Toronto, Canada. They were
considered long shots then, but surprised many with a strong performance
finishing 5th to effectively capture the Gold Medal in the "B" Pool
division. A repeat performance in Sierre will only strengthen their claim as
legitimate contenders on a global level. Bermuda is a defensive-minded
team that will play with great intensity. They have many speedy forwards who
will attempt to wear down their opponents and take advantage of scoring
opportunities resulting from gritty play. Expect nothing fancy from this
team, but they will play with a lot of heart and determination. Those
elements proved to be key factors for their success in 2001.
Look for sniper Eric Bertrand, who finished third overall
in scoring at the world championships, to contribute offensively. Also watch
for goalie John Cowan, selected to the world's all-star team,
to come up with some big saves when tested. With few personnel changes,
Bermuda enters the tournament with more experience and higher expectations.
Expect newcomers Matt Fleck and Tom Worthington-White
to provide more depth for the team in the offensive zone.
Most of Bermuda's players grew up in Canada where they honed their skills
by playing ice hockey. Bermuda's status as a leading offshore jurisdiction
for international business attracted many of the team's elite professionals
to work for prominent companies involved in international finance,
accounting, and technology. Accordingly, ball hockey is a serious
recreational past time for a squad often dubbed 'Team CEO'.
While ball hockey is still a fledgling sport on an island known more for
its warm climate and tropical beaches, it is also very much alive and
growing. With less than a hundred players to draw from and without a proper
rink facility, the Bermuda team is undeterred by their lack of resources.
Instead, this group of determined overachievers is very much enthusiastic
about their chances in Sierre. Their progress and development so far is
testament to their will. Expect a strong showing as they are ready to put
Bermuda on the world stage once again in Sierre.
